Calman Trust. Leaving HOME in the Highlands

If you are hoping to rent privately then the best way to go about finding accommodation is by looking in your local newspapers.

You can also search online for property if you click here.

Tenancies

A Private Landlord or Letting Agency are more likely to use a Short Assured Tenancy.  It is the most common type of tenancy.

If you want to leave before your tenancy has run out then you must give a written notice to your landlord or letting agency.

The minimum notice you have to give is:

  • 40 days for a tenancy of 6 months or longer
  • 28 days if your tenancy is run on a month-to-month basis.

 Your Rights

  • Your landlord can only come into your home at times that you have agreed on.
  • If your landlord needs to come into your home for an inspection, or to repair something, then you must be given at least 24 hours notice in writing telling you so.

Joint Tenancy

If you have a joint tenancy with flatmates then you all have exactly the same rights and responsibilities.  You are all equally responsible for paying the rent and looking after your property.
