Calman ArtWorks: Call for Artists 2012

Young people working with Calman Trust are looking for an inspiring professional artist who has the ability to work with them to create ArtWorks’ second annual event in Inverness in 2012.

What is Calman?
Calman Trust works alongside young people in the Inverness area who are making the transition to independence, and supports them in developing the skills and confidence needed to live a fulfilled and meaningful life. Calman offers housing support and employment focussed training, which will be tailored to enable ArtWorks to integrate into the existing Calman provision.

Calman has secured funding from the Inspiring Communities strand of Creative Scotland supported by the National Lottery to develop a yearly event of high quality creative work to be developed, created and run by young people working in partnership with artists and the Calman team. Their participation will inspire and promote personal development and life chances and open up new opportunity. We are seeking a professional artist who ideally has experience of successfully working with young people who have limited experience of involvement in creative activities.

The artist will work collaboratively with young people to develop the vision, theme, content and design of this year’s event. Young people will be involved across all areas of the project including project direction, creation, PR and marketing. This is the second year of three years of funding.

What we’re inspired by:
Der Lauf der Dinge (Fischli & Weiss)

Edinburgh Cow Parade (various artists)

Millennium Clock (Stead, Besudsky, Sandstöm, Jürgen, Tübbecke &Lenert)

We are not looking to replicate these projects, but they seem to contain the potential to meet the following criteria which are fundamental to the success of the project:
What Why
Artwork which is divisible into component parts In order to enable ArtWorks to fit into Calman’s organisational structure; how this happens from an operational view will be worked out as soon as an artist and initial direction have been established
Strong theme To ensure that the component parts feel part of the same project
Stimulates measurable change for YP Makes a difference for young people involved, captured by working with the training team
Allows for individual creativity To maximise experience of the artistic process for young people and personal connection with the project
Strong element of team work Important that young people feel they are working with others; both creatively and generating and maintaining momentum for the project
Excitement and connection to the project by young people To maximise potential for ownership by young people of the project
Incorporate public viewing/ performance Validates project in young people’s eyes and provides an audience
Involve young people across different communities (with potential scope for artwork to be shown/ performed across Highland) Widen net for participation of young people (and maximise impact of project)
An element of photography/ video documentation of the project Create a valuable record of the event

Goals of the project:
  • Young people working with artists create quality art for a public performance or exhibition
  • Young people become inspired creative producers aware of how art can be personally meaningful
  • Young people develop personally though their involvement

Finances:
Artist’s (or Artists’) salary, materials and marketing budget: in the region of £10,000. Should a project require additional funding there would be scope for the artist and Calman to put together additional funding bids to meet this requirement.

Timescale of the project:
There is not a fixed timescale for the project, but we would expect it to be an extended piece of work, completed at the latest by the end of 2012.

How to apply:
Please send a CV and up to 6 images of your work, along with your response to the following four questions (no more than 200 words each) to Ferga Perry before 9am on Monday 19th December.
