Calman Trust. Leaving HOME in the Highlands

"I enjoy gardening, reading and shopping with my daughter and spending time together as a family."

Margaret O’Donnell
Housing Support Worker

My job consists of supporting young people 16/25 who are homeless or at risk of becoming homeless. Support them to ensure they receive the benefits they are entitled to and be there when they need advice and this can be on various issues as most of them are extremely vulnerable and require a great deal of support to deal with every day living.

I love my job working with young people enabling them to progress with their lives especially when they get their own tenancy and manage to sustain it. The other great thing about working at Calman we all work well as part of a team and all support each other. All the staff are Brilliant.

I have many years of nursing background and worked as a Community Nurse working with various age groups, this give me the ability to be caring understanding and a very good listener. I was also a Nurse Manager for a number of years and understand the importance of stability and consistency in peoples lives. l have a son and daughter of my own and understand how important it is for them to have me there when they need some advice or a chat. This has assisted me to be understanding of the role I do as support worker.

"I enjoy staying in, going out, chilling out on sunny days, reading a good book, watching a good film - have taken an interest in walking up hills ...small one’s for now hoping to progress to medium ones this year! Spot of gardening; have planted some veg for the first time so will be pretty cool if they grow!"

Housing Support Worker

I work with young people who have found themselves in difficult circumstances, some of the things we do - providing advice and guidance, helping out with appointments, form filling, liaising with anyone else who may be working with them and hopefully finding time to have a bit of fun along the way.

What I like most about working at Calman is seeing people move on with their lives and managing well without being nagged at too much!

I have been doing support work now for around 20 years and still learning new things all the time and still making bits up as I go along!

"I enjoy spending time with my family, socialising with friends and shopping."

Sara Ross
Housing Support Worker

My job consists of supporting young people who are under 25 who are homeless or at risk of homelessness. The support needed varies from person to person but can include advice regarding their homeless claim, benefits and budgeting/debt advice etc. Support may also include practical support with their tenancy, sourcing furniture, neighbour disputes etc.

I enjoy working at Calman as my colleagues are all very supportive and friendly to work with. I also enjoy supporting my clients to move forward in their lives after often a difficult start in life.

Before I came to Calman four years ago I worked with ex offenders, as an employment development advisor, supporting them to gain employment and to deal with their past offences. I also have experience working with under 16’s who had been excluded from school and who were at risk of substance misuse. Prior to that I worked within people with learning difficulties, where I often had to support them to overcome discrimination. I use the skills I learnt in these roles to support the young people I work with at Calman.
